A century ago yesterday, former British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour sent Lord Walter Rothschild a letter made known as the Balfour Declaration. The letter promised to establish in Palestine “a national home for the Jewish people” and thus facilitated the Zionist project of settlement on these lands.
The Palestinians who were violently forced to leave their homes in the aftermath of the 1948 Nakba still face harsh discrimination in the countries they’ve fled to. Lebanon is no exception, as the residing Palestinians are deprived of their basic human rights.
On this end, the AUB Secular Club reiterates its support to the Palestinian cause and right for return, condemns states and institutions supporting Zionism. We are lifelong witnesses to the systemic racism and violence committed by the apartheid state of Israel against the Palestinian people and we feel that it’s important to resist Israel via the boycott divestment and sanctions movement (BDS). We also recognize host countries’ – like Lebanon – unjust and discriminatory treatment of Palestinian refugees and stand with them in their fight for basic human rights.
